Hi guys/gals.
So after a 15 yr break from keeping a tarantula. (Due to living at home) I'm now into my second week of ownership of 2 tarantulas.
1.Brachypelma Emilia
2. Chromatpelma cyaneopubescen.

How many spiders is ample for a beginner?
I've seen a couple more I like the look of but can't get them anywhere near where I live so will need to do a 450 mile round trip to collect . ( as I don't agree with posting anything alive).
Others I like
1. Acanthoscurria genicilata
2.grammostola aureostriata

Shall I keep the 2 I have for now?

Thanks for stopping by

I got my first T, an OBT, 9 months ago and now have 17. I guess it's as many as you can manage to look after although they don't take up much time.

I got my first one maybe a little over a month ago, now I've got 2 T's (G. rosea and B. smithi) and a wolf spider with hundreds of babies. If you don't like live shipping you should look into reptile shows in your area. There's usually a couple invert people at them, and the prices are often better than shipping anyway.

hi Enn49.
wow nice collection!. i must say i do like the look of the P. Metallica. what are they like to keep? do u handle? temperament?.
my first tarantula i had was a male G Rosea. he was large when i got him and i had him for 2 yrs before he sadly died. at the moment my brachypelma emilia has blocked off her entrance to her hide and haven't seen much of her.and my little chromatopelma cyaneopupescens is eating well and seems to be enjoying lining his/her entrance with webbing. very interesting to watch.

I don't know about the systems in the UK, but here a lot of breeders will use private companies like 'Ship My Reptile' that are generally safer than trying to ship on your own (a lot of the breeders I've talked to ship their animals using services like that). I prefer to just pick up animals myself when I can though.

I don't handle any of the Ts although that may change when my little B. albo grows a bit. The P. metallica is fast but would rather run away than attack but much calmer than I had been led to believe. It has a habit of settling on the lid of its container which worried me at first when it came to maintenance but it will stay still while I do the necessary jobs. The ones that worry me most are the K. brunnipes as they are so tiny that I'm scared they will sneak out while the lid is off lol.

The shops I deal with mainly pack the Ts so well that there is no problem with them using the Royal Mail. They always come in cardboard boxes filled with packing beans and a heat pad when necessary

Hi Sym,

Wow 15 year break that's quite a while,I struggled with a 2 year break before getting back into the hobby as it's really quite addictive.
When it comes to reputable suppliers here in the uk the one that I would highly recommend is (TSS) The Spider Shop, although I'm going to be waiting until after the winter before I place anymore orders as even with heat packs I still don't like taking the risk in winter.
Also if you can wait until May next year and you can get to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry then The British Tarantula Society have there annual show and you can pick up plenty of T's there not just from uk breeders but from breeders from across Europe.

Tarantulas Bristol are another good one and for those in the US and elsewhere they ship overseas too.

Hi Ghost.
Thanks for the info. I will make a note of that month.sounds like a good day out. I was never allowed to keep a tarantula at home. And when I did move out and started renting there was always something in the tenancy agreement stating no pets of any kind. Now I have my own house and can fill it with what ever I like lol. So it wasnt a case of I didn't want to, I just couldnt ;).

That's where I got 5 of my 6 Tarantulas from and they are really good. I like their website layout (female, male, Other, pre-order and group keeping section) and they usually reply to any inquiries within a couple of hours. Prices are also very good and you can't fault the packing.
The only thing that is missing is a more detailed description of ALL the species with size, disposition and suitability (like The Spider Shop has), but hey, that's what online care sheets are for.

P.S: I've been telling myself not to buy anymore Ts, but I can feel myself itching for another 1-2 again. Been "window shopping" a lot again, too, and that's how it starts. Still want an LP, A. Braunhauseni, and maybe even a P. Metallica or OBT. I've also been looking at an AF B. vagans...
