Hello
Just a personal opinion, not saying this is the way to go since many people use them.
I use fruit with high water content, like say oranges etc. I do not use any water source at all,my dubia lobster and Turkistan are flourishing. I also use oats or oatmeal as substrate,I've suggested this to a few people all having great results,a substrate that's eaten that never needs change.
This is a colony that I recently started 4 weeks ago, note the babies and see I use only fruit and oats. You will also see,I use Vaseline as a barrier so ants or nasties can't get in or roaches get out.
That's all I use,see I don't just advise I can actually prove what I'm saying. This doesn't mean its the best way,but for me it works very well this latest colony got started recently and already growing exponentially.
I use fresh fruits or veggies - usually whatever is spoiling that I haven't eaten for myself. I haven't tried the oatmeal thing yet. I'm about to put some in there now for my dubia and my hissers!
