This is actually stress behavior. When a tarantula's burrow is disturbed too much they will plug it with debris.
it's easy to document in the wild if you keep pestering a tarantula in her burrow in an area with lots of loose rocks and debris- I actually had an aphonopelma steindachneri plug her burrow like that after i bothered her too much, went away for 20 minutes and came back to a burrow plugged with stones, they were all granite, too meaning she knew what she wanted. a sphere is a great thing to plug the burrow with, it's a total seal.
