I've handled and have cared for reptiles for about 12 years and was handling very exotic animals. I've never thought about tarantulas before but got my first one last year. It's been almost a year and I now have 5 of them. A desert blond, pinktoe, Obt, Starburst baboon, and curlyhair and females and love them all. I've heard very negative comments about T's before I owned any but after owning them I realized how much they are misunderstood. My friends all think I'm crazy for owning some too lol. But I am really glad though that there are people like here on the forum that share the same passion as I do and don't think I'm crazy for owing T's.

I started 9 months ago and (only) have 8 (in order of purchase: G. Rosea, B.Boehmei, A. genic, GBB, A. versi, T. gigas, LP and P. Met - half slings, half subadults). There's a few more that I would love to get (B. Auratum and/or Vagans, Blue Fang, another Avic, and more), but my husband, who's been very tolerant to accept the last 4 "this will be the last one, promise!" Ts, draws the line now, lol. He likes to watch them, but I think he gets annoyed by the life food (has to be from very small (LP) to quite large (Genic)).

I began a year ago although my son already had a couple of Ts, and I now have 26 of my own, soon to be 28. I started with an OBT and worked down to the easier T like the curlies so I did it all the wrong way round but have enjoyed every minute of the year.

Welcome to the addictive hobby of tarantula keeping. Always glad to see people getting involved into a "less accepted" hobby.[emoji3] Nice mix you have there, I like baboons, my favorite type of T.
I've been a keeper for more years than you are old, and am still learning new things about these awesome creatures.
I sometimes get the "you are weird for keeping those" response from people. I just say "Anyone can keep dogs or cats, but it takes a true animal lover to have exotic pets, now what do you have?". Usually we have a informative talk about how fascinating tarantulas are and how to properly care for them. At work, everyone knows I keep them and the majority will occasionally ask questions. Few of my friends will even go into my T room, others have varying degrees of arachnophobia. [emoji6]
Keep us posted on any new additions, I'm sure it won't stop at 5. Lol!!
Happy T'ing.

lol Before I got into T's I thought the rate that people acquired new snakes was pretty high, but it's nothing compared to how quickly people seem to accumulate T's. I started last fall and currently have 2 T's, a wolf spider, and about six of her babies that I'm probably going to release where I caught the mother once the weather warms up. It's always good to see people getting involved in a hobby most people think is crazy.

I started with a B. Auratum last April (be a year in about 6 days) and then this year extended my time with 3 more...a semi-adult E. parvulus and my latest additions 2 slings...G rosea and G pulchripes. I'm only after one more and that's a B smithi...then I have the 5 I want (and what my parents will allow lol).
