Sorry for the terrible lighting. I had to use flash. But it's a 12x12x12 exo terra enclosure with some cork bark, a stick and some fake plants, plus a water dish. Room is at about 75F. How am I doing?

I hate telling people this because exoterra make nice enclosures..the fine mesh screen they use on the top is dangerous for spiders. They get their claws caught in it..ive read a bunch of threads about it. I used one for awhile, and taped over most of the mesh on the bottom with packing tape. But that sacrifices a lot of ventilation. Its easily fixable by removing the screen and replacing I with a thin sheet of ventilated acrylic glued to the plastic frame.

I agree with Mass: most Avicularia love to build their nest almost against the ceiling of their enclosure. Which means yours could be staying against the mesh a lot of times... with the danger of claws/fangs being trapped in it. But it's no problems to replace it by what Mass said: one piece of acrylic with some holes drilled (small holes...) in it for ventilation.

About your enclosure, if it's for an Avicularia (is it?), I'd personally put more vertical cork barks (from bottom to top, or almost), maybe some vertical plastic plants (for the height) so that your Avic can build its home in the height and have a lot of places to anchor its webbing. Try arranging your enclosure so that you have a lot of possibilities for your T to web close to the top of the enclosure.

Hi everyone. Just wanted to introduce myself because I am new to the forum and the arachnid hobby. I currently have plenty of reptiles and amphibians, and was completely terrified of spiders until I started handling them at the pet store I work at and now I'm really taking a liking to them. This Costa Rican zebra has really caught my attention. Only problem is, my girlfriend absolutely won't let me have one. I think I can convince her, or I'll just buy it anyway, haha. Anyway, glad to be a member and I'm enjoying all the threads. :)View attachment 14522
......and it is always always easier to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission...lol
Welcome to the forum :)

Wonder if my Avics are confused on up and down, or just stupid ;) Both enclosures have plenty of anchor points from top to bottom and ventilation on 2 sides from top to probably 3/4's of the way down.

The versicolor made a web just above half way and relaxes in it or hangs out on the wall near the top waiting to make a break for it.

The sp. Peru Purple spends all of the time down near the substrate, there's just enough room for the pinhead roaches to run under the web and scare the piss out of it, making the avic bolt to the top of the enclosure. First time i saw that i was laughing so hard I almost dropped the catch cup of roaches i was feeding :)

Get her to see a video or photos of P. metallica, and if she'll like it, then tell her that you need to practice with other Ts before you can get a pokie! :D

sorry to hear that :(

On the flip side, the best way to get over the loss of a T is to get another one or 5.

Oh man, was it dehydration that caused it? Maybe there was nothing you could do either way, don't be too hard on yourself. These things happen to the best of us. :T:

I assume it would've been, but while I had it, I made sure the humidity stayed up. The conditions in the store may not have been quite as humid though, so maybe it was too late since I only had it for a week or two.

That being said... I can't decide whether to get another a avicularia since I have the set up and they're nice little guys, or go ahead and try a b Smithi. They seem to be pretty amazing and I have a couple spare 10 gallon tanks open.

I'd go with the B. smithi sling. Inexpensive and there's nothing like watching them grow into their colors.
