hello,
im new to the group and posted an introduction in the proper section, but didn't want to mix my question in with that so here I am.lol
Today I went to the all animal expo in wheaton Il, and bought nine spiderlings. four of them were tiny little L. Parahybana. less than half an inch im thinking.
three of them stand on top of their substrate smack dab in the middle of the enclosure like tiny sentry's.
the fourth vial for all intents and purposes appears to be empty. I have to admit I opened the first vial to see the baby but, never even looked in the next three, just put them in my bag and went on with my search. about 2 inches down in the substrate there MIGHT be a spider but I really cant tell. two microscopic dubia roaches were put in the vial and I believe they just burrowed down also but cant find them either.
My question is do I dig in looking for a spider or just give it some time and see if one emerges? if shes hiding in a burrow freshly molted I don't want to risk hurting her, but I sure would like to know if I paid for an empty vial or dead spider. what do you guys think? dig? or wait?
my wifes books say leave it alone so if I do go digging without " experts" telling me to i'm a dead man.
here is a photo of one of the sexy little things that are out in the open just cuz well I want you to look at my cool spider damnit!

Hi there! Are you sure that vial contains a parahybana? I had a couple of parahybana slings before. Base on what I know, they are not burrowers. So it should be like the other 3 you were speaking of.

lol no, I am not sure that vial even contains a spider let alone what kind of spider. I have never seen a spider in there. that's why I want to dig.
im not worried I got ripped off. the man I bought them from would make it right if I felt I was wronged whether he agrees or not. its just killin me not seeing it.

I've kept three L. parahybana from slings, and one did dig and spent the first several months of its life underground. So, if it's a smaller sling, there is a definite possibility that it could have burrowed and is living the "pet hole" life.

That said, before you try digging it up (which could be dangerous if there IS a tiny sling hiding in the substrate) perhaps you can try enticing it out by putting a prey item on the surface to entice it out. I've had several slings less than .5", and they are always very tough to spot. If there is a T in there, and you try digging it up, you might injure it by accident. If you put a piece of small cricket up top, it could come out to eat (or drag the food down to its burrow). Either way, you would know that a) it DOES exist and b) it's alive and well. Just a thought. :)

I would wait until night time and try feed it an appropriate sized cricket or roach(based on the size of the others)

I would try this for three nights in a row and if I dont see it come out to eat I would dig it up, gently, to see what was going on.

well last night I got impatient and emptied the vial into a measuring cup, after sifting through the dirt I was able to find the tiny dead spider. I THINK the eco earth became too compact and he was unable to dig out of his burrow. but really have no idea what happened.

I am very sorry to read this,I hope you can make sense of this somehow and maybe from this draw future experience to be used with the next T.

Sad story.. but the brighter side is you got the other 3 slings set to grow as very big and beautiful T's..

yeah it sucks but, I'm not too upset, as far as I know I bought him dead, would be diff if one of the ones I've been feeding and caring for died, that would suck a lot more.
