I purchased this as a sexed female M. balfouri in August of last year. I have it in a Reptizoo enclosure with coco fiber substrate with a layer of decomposed granite on the surface. It has never quite behaved normally and while it has dug out a den, it spends lots of time pacing the enclosure...
I need to start posting about all of my successes as a keeper instead of when I have a problem. People are going to think I run an invertebrate death camp. I swear I actually know what I'm doing. Sometimes...
I'm doing something wrong with my Diplurids and I cannot figure out what. This morning...
Thank you for the information. I did make a slope but I think the pre-made hole is what messed everything up. I'll give it a little more time but may need to coax it out and fill that hole in so it makes it's own.
I've had my Liphistius for several months now and it refuses to make a trap door. It lives in one of the pre-made holes I make with a pencil and has done nothing else. The substrate is about 50% red clay and the half is peat moss/sand. It's eating well and seems to be fine otherwise but I'm not...
I have around 60 T’s which I know to some is not a large collection, but my fiancé will assure you it is an insane amount of tarantulas.
Currently I have all the enclosures on wire shelves a la Amazon Basics. This works great but isn’t very aesthetically pleasing to me. I’d like to have the...
I bought an almost pin head sized B. albiceps in 2018 and it just got to be about 1/4 inch. Today is feeding day so I took the enclosure from the shelf and was setting it down on the table and the enclosure slipped from my hand and fell on the floor. I have absolutely no idea what happened. I...
I’ve never kept scorpions before, mostly because I’ve always read that they need external heat. As I get deeper into the invert keeping hobby I wonder if this is actually true or not. I remember when it was “known” that tarantulas needed external heat. Now we know this isn’t true. As far as I...
People love blaming any kind of unknown injury on brown recluse bites. There is no way they could ever “prove” this was a spider bite. I am also fairly certain we now know brown recluse bites are not anywhere near as bad as the media likes to portray.
Tom's Big Spiders has a podcast about packing and moving spiders, you should give it a listen. I agree that deli cups are probably the best way to go. Less chance that the T can get jostled around and you can easily put it in a bag or something to bring into rest stops and the like.
Unfortunately there aren't any studies that have been on tap water and its effects on tarantulas so all we have available is anecdotal evidence. I have been using tap water for years without any ill effects as have many other keepers. It is worth keeping in mind that some places use chloramine...
