Hi all Josh here
Im looking to get into the hobby. I have done a lot of research already and watched a lot of videos on YouTube (mainy the tarantula collective) but I’ve joined here to get some more info. I’m looking to start off with a docile spiderling such as a Chile Rose or a Mexican red knee. I understand that they have a larger margin of error but I’m not one skip stages. Also is their any other retailers in the UK other than the spider shop? That’s the only one I can find on google. Thanks

Hello & welcome to the forum & the hobby.

Be aware that some of the more docile species can be VEEEEEEEERY slow growing. So be prepared for a small sling to take a few years to reach even juvenile size.

We are lucky in the UK & have several really good suppliers. Other than the spider shop, who are excellent, there are also So Many Legs, Portsmouth Tarantulas, Bugz UK, Spider Planet & probably numerous others I have forgotten.

If you buy an adult, be aware males are very short lived by comparison to females.

Welcome Josh!

Research first; that is music to my ears! I may make a recommendation. Get a juvenile B hamorii or B smithi, and a Tlitocatl albopilosus (curly hair) sling so you can experience the sling and juvenile stages simultaneously. Both species have the same care and keeping needs

A juvenile Brachypelma will be out most of the time vs buried and the T albopilosus will grow relatively quickly with good care; and probably mature before the Brachypelma!

Welcome to the forum, and hobby!

Hey Josh!

Welcome to the forum/hobby. If your still taking recommendations. I would definitely look into the Grammostola pulchra. There pretty docile and have an amazing rich black color. Also they have a great appetite (careful not to over feed). Only downside is there super slow growers. My sling is also always out on display moving the substrate around.

Welcome aboard.

The tarantulas mentioned are all good ones, although I will put my two cents in for the G. pulchra, Brazilian Black Tarantula.

Coincidentally, YouTuber Dave's Little Beasties (based in England) just did a rehousing of a G. pulchra. He recommends keeping them at a slightly higher temperature and humidity than others have.

I also like G. rosea as even as slings they seem to be more active than G. pulchra and G. pulchripes, the three species I own.

Welcome aboard! Harder to find these days, but people forget about E. campastratus. Pretty, easy to raise and good appetite, display tarantula, docile, and grows much faster than some of those listed above. Good luck with your search. Let us know what you decide.

Campastratus, aren't they the ones that fly south to Argentina for the winter about this time?
