Recently decided it's time to get a tarantula, it will be a female Chilean Rose Hair. Bought a 10 gallon tank and cleaned off the sofa table. I'm going to make a home for Chili. I'll be, pestering everyone for help.
Yes this is a great place to learn. Lurk, ask questions, educate yourself about your intended pet, the Grammostola porteri ( Chilean rose hair tarantula). It is a very nice tarantula. Fairly slow grower.
Side note, there are also G. rosea which are Chilean Rose tarantulas that historically some have thought the same species but that are considered distinct.
And there are many other sources as well. Check out the podcasts and YouTube channel Tom's Big Spiders by Tom Moran. I believe he had a rosea for a long time and she lived a long life.
The tank you bought is quite large (20x10x12H) except for perhaps an adult female. Is that your intention? Adult females may be hard to find and expensive.
I would recommend some research around tank size in relation to the size.of the spider. Smaller is often much better for both you and the spider, plus, too much free climbing height can be dangerous (falls from high)
We are all happy to help and love pictures when you do get set up.
Welcome!
Welcome!! I respectfully agree with both Dusty and octane junkie they both are very well experienced tarantula keepers and make a good point for safety reasons on making sure the size of your enclosure is the proper size for your tarantula. Can't wait to see the pictures of the new beauty and of course if you have any questions feel free to ask we'd be happy to help welcome aboard!!
G. rosea was my first tarantula. Hard to believe that was over 20 years ago. She was a mature female when I got her. Wish I would've had this forum as a resource back then.
Welcome. I am a newb. I have my T since July. Wish I would have been on this forum then. I watch Youtube a lot. IMHO Jungle Bob is the worst. Richard is great. learned a lot. Members will tell you what they told me with respect to the 10 Gallon aquarium.
Hate to be a broken record, but I wouldn't use a 10 gallon unless you're getting an adult.
I set up my first 2 inch juvenile in a beautiful planted bioactive 10 gallon enclosure only to rehouse a few months later to a much smaller space.
If you already have a 10 gallon, you can still make it work as long as your T has some size to it and you have a lot of substrate to prevent a fall.
Let us know how it goes best wishes to you and your T, and welcome to the forum.
