I feel like I'm somewhat in a good place to give advice on this topic, as I got my first tarantula on 6/9/17 (a 3/4" L. parahybana sling, $55 shipped from Swifts lol). About a month later I got a juvie A. seemani from a local pet shop. Now I have 13 of T's total, 6 juvies and the rest slings (you can see which species I have now in my signature). I believe keeping the LP sling first was a great way to ease into the hobby as you learn from practice. And of course lots of research (usually on this forum) on each species before purchase is obviously a must.
