Handling my T?

Hello,

I just got a Tarantula a few days ago. She is beautiful and very friendly. With most animals I would usually give them a week to settle in, and then handle them a little each day. However, I have heard that you should handle your tarantula as less as possible.

Would it do harm to handle her a little bit each day after she settles in?

handling is up to the individual. some don't because their T's are not the handling type, other don't because they may fall out of their hands and hurt them self, and some won't hold them because some times drop loose hair and itch like crazy. then their are those who hold them, while their is no real set in stone rules about how often you should hold. I am not sure what species you have, but I wouldn't hold her everyday, just because it might confuse her or make it hard for her to ever truly be settle in. if you want to hold her then only do it once a week at most, but once a month would be better.

What kind do you have?
On handling, it's stressful for the T, and some just don't respond well to it at all. The only T I've ever held was my mexican red knee, and I don't even hold him very much anymore, he grew out of being handled :p
Just make sure you don't do it every day, and that the T isn't too upset by it.

handling any T comes with risk of a bite and the reason is very simple!!! their feet are like your tongue they taste and feel with their feet so when they on another living animal they always try move off it as soon as possible. They are like one big ball consisting of nerves sensing everything. even breathing on them whilst handling can trigger a bite as the bristles are hollow and detect air temp fluctuations etc. handling any tarantula is a risk you take. if your ok with a bite then go for it but remember they are unpredictable like all animals and change behavior in seconds.

I have a pink toed, and I haven't tried to handle her since she jumped across the room one time and tried to run away. LOL. Took me 15 minutes to get her back in her habitat.

Lol yeah thats happened to me a few times with avics its the norm for them to jump like that. If not jump then dedicate as a result from stress.

The bite has never worried me, it's the reaction to the bite, and the well being of the animal. Risk in my opinion, no where near worth the "reward"

I agree, there are lots of risks, dropping the T, having it run away, getting bit, and stress on the animal. They are very happy being left alone :)

Thanks for all the replies. I've been handling her once every few days. She doesn't seem to mind. She is a rose hair by the way.
just so your aware in the future just because the species is deemed docile does not me all of them are. their a plenty of rose out their that are quite defensive and also cases for mood swings after molting. so just be aware of this in the future.

I agree with spiderengineeer as I've seen some very ago ones that have mood swings of note. I guess like a married couple does after a few years ha ha ha... only joking here pps ha ha ha.... the choice is always yours remember we can only give opinion on pour personal experience. She might never nail you or one day she is gonna tag u bad but hey u now know the risks so keep us up too speed. R
