Hello,
My name is Ben.
I found a tarantula in my attic today. According to Wikipedia there are 144 genera and 950 species, which are distributed among 12 subfamilies.. Can someone help me determine the gender and species of my spider? My dad said he bought it in 1984. I can also upload more pictures.
Friendly greetings
Ben

Hi Ben :)
From your pictures I can tell its a mature male.. No idea on the species though as it looks like all the pictures are of the underneath of the tarantula.. Any chance you can take any from the top of the tarantula? Even then it maybe very difficult to determine exactly what species it is

Not a T. stirmi but definitely a mature male. That spider has iridescent purple coloration on its femurs. Stirmi do not have that purple coloration. My guess would be a pamphobeteus/phormictopus species possibly as they get large, as well (not as large as theraphosa sp., though).
