Back in March, I got my first tarantula slings. Three, half-inch, Cyriocosmus sp. Tambopata slings.
I know, I know, starting out with a species that hasn’t been fully described and is new to the hobby…
Their care is very similar to C. elegans though, and all three are now over an inch DLS. (1.25” - 1.5” before their most recent molts.)
What’s bugging me is what they do with their molts.
I’d like to check the molts, at least the molt of the one I suspect is male, but these silly spiders like to drag their molts to the very bottom of their burrows and make them into something like a carpet down there. Decor.
That means I’ll have to take out the cork hide, rip up all the webbing, and dig for it. Which obviously freaks out the spiders in a big way. Especially if I have to cup them.
I hate upsetting these particular spiders; they’ve been so shy and sensitive these past few molts. It makes me feel bad. Lol They don’t kick hairs or get defensive, they just scrunch up and look pathetic. Their last rehouse made me feel like a total a-hole.
I wish they chucked their molts out like my P. irminia does. That one was deposited neatly in the water dish. So easy. Way too small to sex, but easy to remove at least.
Meh. Wish me luck I guess. With any luck, gaining some more size has settled them down again and the disturbance will just be a small blip. Not some big drama. They were pretty bold as little slings, hopefully they’ve outgrown their weird, shy phase.
