  • Hello, I am planning to purchase a tarantula next month and I was wondering if you all would please tell me which is your favorite "pet" type tarantula, as in which is the most docile? And also I was wondering if you could recommend a site where I can purchase one? Thanks :)

I recommend brachypelma smithi aka Mexican red knee. They are beautiful and generally not bad tempered (although they are all individual and have there own personality.)

I recommend the rose hair (grammostola rosea). I have one and the moment I got her she was my favourite. Even my brother has held her and he's only 4. I've never seen a Rosie pissed off!
If you're looking for one more 'cool' looking the B Smithi / Red.knee is also a good choice. :)

There are several Ts that make good firsts, such as...

Chilean Rose
Brazilian Black
Mexican Redknee
Mexican Redleg
Pink Zebra Beauty
Chaco Goldenknee

If you are in the U.S. a good site to buy Ts from is Jamie's Tarantulas...there are lots of other good ones but this is the one I've had experience with. Great service every time. Good luck! :)

Ya, If you can get a Brachypelma Emilia(true mexican red leg, not to be confused with B Boehmei the mexican red leg) I'd recommend them just because I personally like the look more. They're fairly docile(still wouldnt pick her up, don't know if I could without itching horribly) and they need regular room temps(bout 70 degrees) and rarely if ever need to be misted(i'd still do a lot of research into all of these factors no matter what T you get).

Thank you for the responses :) I went to Jamie's tarantulas and after comparing the descriptions, looks, cost, and care of the types she offers I decided on a chaco golden knee spiderling. What do you think?

(other types I like are Pink zebra beauty and Brazilian black)

I won't be getting it until around the 15th, it's going to be a b-day present for a loved one :) I am also going to order a spiderling kit and some pinhead roaches along with it. How big will it have to get before it can eat meal worms?

Not my favorite but definitely my first T, a Honduran Curly-hair (B.albopilosum)

She sure helped me understand a lot about Ts..

I find other Brachypelma species docile but quite the hair-kickers.

She grew from 2.5 inches

To 6 inches in a year hehe..
