hey, I've noticed that many T videos on youtube are accompanied with heavy metal and the hobyists appear to be heavy rockers.

Is there a correlation between what music / culture / movement you self identify with and how or why you keep T's or other invertebrates?

I am not into heavy metal but got introduced to spiders and other invertabrates via my BSc degree, you?

keep it nice and clean this is a loosely based scientific observational inquiry

Interesting observation, not sure there's a correlation but I like rap, jazz, classical, R&B, hip hop, classic rock and disco...

How about you?
Nope, sorry. I would recommend you to go to the "introductions" thread of the forum and introduce yourself to everyone :)
A couple of pictures of your Ts would warm our hearts too ;)
I concur, please properly introduce yourself!

Tarantula Kat isn't heavy metal, more reminiscent of Harry Potter. And I'm not sure if Exotic Lair even has a musical intro. As for Tom Moran and Dark Den I think it may be partially related to the fact that they grew up when guitar rifts and metal were at their peak? Just speculating.

Great points. OP could be cherry picking to support his predetermined view.
If I were grading I'd first like to see the actual analysis that causes him to arrive at this presumption.
Not saying that he didn't do his homework, but you sometimes have to wonder.
The other thing is that YouTube's algorithm surfaces suggestions based on targeted user preferences - so OP's video suggestions could be completely different from any one else, leading to a compromised data set.
My 2 c.

Well we are all biased in some ways.

I was just perusing YouTube and noticed this trend.

The other thing I mentioned if you read the OP was if tarantulas fit a cultural point of view such as heavy metal or gothic.

To are quite scary to most who are unfamiliar with them. I also keep centipedes which double peoples anxiety

So if I were grading I would say you need to read the question more carefully and state what the actual algorithms are you refer to and always cite your references:)

I'm sorry, I appear to have wandered down the wrong alley and ended up on Arachnoboards.

I just chalk it up to tarantulas (snakes, lizards etc.) having a spooky, countercultural image in a western world where even house spiders give people the willies. It's something that might form an initial attraction for people who are also into facial piercings and t-shirts with skulls on 'em.
Not exactly my bag (I do like a bit of lighter metal from time to time) but if they're anything like Tom Moran it's small potatoes.

(It's a little like the time I saw someone say that fantasy was inherently linked to heavy metal. Odd, I thought. It always puts me in mind of Basil Poledouris, Howard Shore, Edvard Grieg even.)

I'll bite. I'm curious to see what others were labeled as then and now.
To address the cultural aspect, in my teens I was labeled so many things; grunge, hippy, punk, freak, weirdo. I considered myself "alternative" as in, not main stream, and though I was a "pretty girl" I dressed in corduroys or jeans, band tees (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Bad Religion, Phish, WSP), plaid flannel over shirt, argyle socks, converse shoes. I've always liked animals more than humans. They're generally nicer, and I always struggled with human relationships.
My peers today tend to label me as boho, earthy and hippy. I guess I'm still not mainstream... A few tattoos that are covered by scrubs. No extra piercings. No creative hair colors.
Music wise, as long as it's not Country, Christian anything, or Gospel, I'm pretty content.

This is very interesting topic.

I think tarantulas, like bats and maybe even ravens, have been associated with darkness and likely death for a long time. So it is not a long stretch to Heavy Metal and Goth.

Having said that, my foggy memory recalls some tarantula books from the 70s and early 80s that had pictures of clean cut buttoned-down shirt wearing tarantula keepers. The nerdy scientist type, like I was and still am. One keeper named his Ts Atilla and Mengele.

So I think ultimately tarantula keeping appeals to a wide spectrum of people, particularly these days.
To answer the OP, I have seen a mix of music backgrounds.

You sound like me. Culturally diverse when it comes to music.............and food. We can't forget the food!!!!!! Did I mention food? Yep, I think I did.

I'm not sure whether it's that easy to stereotype us... I'm a 52 year old Mum of 2 adult daughters, I work as a psychologist and I play the harp. I also like a broad genre of music.

(The fact I also ride motorbikes and generally play heavy rock in the car when driving to and from work is totally beside the point! )

Right I think that’s my point lol

I’m an academic straight laced etc but I feel I enter my dark side when feeding the Ts or something like that lol

I can swing anywhere from Meatloaf & Queen to Disney to
Metal (my brother has just introduced me to Lansdowne) so my playlist is a mess.

I think people pick metal as an accompaniment because its 'exciting' and just seems to fit.
I'd pick a gentle tune for say a snake just slithering around and a fun bouncy tune for a tank of frogs.
