Do tarantulas have preferences to substrate?

I have a tarantula who does not like substrate. I tried to introduce a variety of substrate to my rose hair, but he reacts by pawing at the aquarium, trying to climb out until I took him out. He never does that when I put him on fabric, so I put a blanket in the aquarium and he was fine.

Your sub is likely just to wet. let it dry out and she'll be fine. Get her off the blanket immediately.

It can be. Blakets have threads, and they can get caught in the Tarsus Claws. Sometimes it just takes a T a while to settle in.

If your using peat moss or vermiculite, take it straight for the bag(without getting it moist) and put it in your Ts enclosure, then over flow the water dish in one corner... That will take care of the humidity and give your Rosie nice dry substrate..

I agree, get him off the blanket and then just give him some dry substrate. I use Eco-Earth, but you can get coconut coir from any garden center (for a lot less money as I found out recently), or use any of the other substrate choices that have been suggested. It may take him a bit to settle, but he should be fine after a bit.
