hi all,

I got a sling of these as a freebie and hadn’t done any research obviously, specific care information is difficult to come by so the following is my best guess basic care plan.

I’d appreciate any feed back and obviously I expect some incorrect assumptions, so corrections are really welcome.

psalmopoeus reduncus (Costa Rican orange mouth)

Habitat

Adults 200mmx200mmx300mm minimum
Juvies 150mmx150mmx250mm minimum
Spiderlings a deli cup

4 inch sub for adults/Juvies and 1-2 inch for slings.
Hide for juvie +, twig for sling.
Water dish
Anchor points (flowers, bark, sticks or structures)

Temps and humidity

Temps 23c-27c.

Wet the sub once a week at the corners enough to dry in a week and repeat and use fewer top of enclosure vents to retain some humidity.

Feeding

Slings - Feed twice a week using cut up meal worm or cricket.
Juvies 4-5 crickets every 7 - 10 days
Adults 3 crickets a week depending on abdomen.

Hi
Thats more or less it.
As slings they can tolerate quite moist substrate if your enclosure is ventilated well.I kept my P irminia on very wet substrate all the time with no issues. Also as decor They prefer solid vertical decor.Somethig like cork bark or thick branch to be able to sit on and hunt from.Dont go overboard with fine twigs and such.
They are also quite fast but rather retreat in their hide than shoot out of the enclosure if setup correctly
Regards Konstantin

Easy

Set it up like a non-avic arboreal. Leaning cork bark, water dish, moss and fake foliage for anchor points.

Mage sure the enclosure is not too big for the critter.

The feed schedule is a guide, always favor under feeding vs over feeding.

May I ask why you say under feed over under feed? I didn’t know it was possible to over feed a tarantula. Is it just some species that’ll over eat or any of them?

Offer less food vs more. Reduces number of uneaten feeders in enclosure, stress to animal, mold, rot, etc

And also, yes. Some Ts will eat every time offered food which is also not ideal.

Okay, that makes sense. Been meaning to ask you for a while now. I’ve seen you state it a few times.

Overfeeding slings is dangerous for the sling. If overfed, Prekilled meals will cause rot and stagnation, often a sling killer. Small crickets will feast on a sling entering its molt cycle. If there is any doubt, don't feed, or observe for 10 mins. If no prey takedown, remove it and try again next week.
