Natural bark for hides

I was thinking about harvesting bark from trees in my area to use as hides. Are there any species of trees that I should avoid? What are your thoughts on this?

Wood like pine, fir, cedar are toxic to insects and invertebrates. Keep that in mind using woods up north.
