My local pet store (That Pet Place, if anyone is familiar) has a pretty awesome selection of tarantulas. Every time I go there to get something for my rats or my cat I always come just an inch from buying a T but never do.

They have a 5 inch P. cambridgei, a 3.5 inch B. vagans (among others) and when I went there yesterday they had an adult Avic. avic, probably a good 5 inches for $80. I could've wept as I left the store without that beaut.

The local pet stores were I live don't really sell Ts, or if they (usually the smaller ones) do it's only G. Rosea, but I feel like that when I see Rat pups.
I had to agree not to buy any rats after my last 3 died to be allowed the spiders, but I really miss my 3 furry babies.

I currently have six rats, and they're all growing old. My family has convinced me not to get anymore after my mischief passes so that I may keep my spider collection going. I think it'll be refreshing having a new pet collection, but I'm gonna miss my ratties. :(

I emphasize with you there, a few I want badly unfortunately my moms death left us in the financial poor house,
Once everything is taken care of however I'm going to allow myself three more :)

Raised domestic hooded rats for a while , awesome and intelligent :)

I consider myself very lucky that pet stores in my state can't sell tarantulas. I could very easily see myself either getting into an argument about their husbandry, or leaving with a couple rescues every time I went in to get crickets. ;)

We had a pet rat for over three years, That girl just cracked me up.

I'm trying to avoid the pet shop for just that reason ,
My avic is a picky eater so ordered some roaches, should be here shortly I hope, My A.avic thinks my stand by mealworms are beneath her and will not touch them live or pre killed. I'm trying to avoid a cricket run so I don't end up with whatever they have in that huge reptile enclosure this timeo_O

I'm actually quite surprised by ThatPetPlace's tarantula husbandry. Virtually everything is done as an educated hobbyist would. However I just don't know where the T's are coming from...

$80 is really expensive for an Avicularia avicularia. There are WC adults in most big box stores for $20-30. Console yourself with that thought! I am jealous that I don't have a LPS with a good selection of invertebrates.

It is? Huh, I figured that was an okay price considering it was fairly large. o_O The More you Know.

How long did your rats live for?
Not long enough :(. 2 were half sisters bought from a small pet shop, allegedly sourced from a small breeder. Whoever that breeder was, obviously didn't breed for health, because both died from congenital heart failure at only about 1 1/2. There were 2 roan Dumbos (one had ruby eyes, too)
The 3rd rat (Black Berkshire) was from a pet store chain and came with a bad respiratory infection which left her with scarred lungs. She was always quite the runt, too, and very timid (although she trusted me). At 12 weeks when we bought her, she was the same size as her 2 pack mates who were about 8 weeks by then. She passed away a day before Christmas Eve 2 years ago at just over 2 years old. I think she just missed her mates too much, no human can substitute ratty companionship, IMHO.
If I ever got rats again, I would only go directly to a proper breeder who breeds responsibly or of course rescue a group.

Agree with both of you, they are amazing little individuals, folks dont give them the credit they deserve, much like our T's.

Yeah average is 24-48 months depending on conditions, damn shame really they are entertaining, affectionate and so intelligent.
I got tired of things not living long after developing an attachment for them, :(
