Hello! I'm kinda new in the hobby, I have been interested and reading about tarantulas for many years and NOW I feel ready to buy one. I have the enclosure set up and all the equipment I need, so now I just have to buy the actual tarantula.
I really want a brachypelma hamorii, but I can only find slings on sites like spidersworld etc. No one in my area knows about any of these as grown up for sale, so I don't know.
But I'm also interested in Acanthoscurria geniculata. Is this a good beginner species? Are they bolty and crazy? Can they be handled?
More tips about other species is appreciated aswell, and if theres anything else a beginner should think about.
Thanks!

A geniculata is a great beginner T. They are pretty chill unless there is food involved. They are great eaters that never pass up a meal unless they are in premolt. They can be handled but proceed with caution, as you would with any T. In my opinion tarantulas should NOT be handled as it stresses them out and they can harm you or themselves.

Well said @Kaden Alexander totally agree:) Brachypelmas also make an excellent choice for a first T:D

When the tarantula arrives, should I just leave it alone or should I feed it right away? :)
Leave it to settle for a couple of days before attempting to feed it-when you do feed it if it doesn't take the prey item remove it if it refuses it and try again another day
the most important thing for your tarantula to have is a dish of water at all times:)

Thank you! I'll probably get a new hide with a smaller opening I think, but I have to wait for it to arrive so I can see the size :) or do you think it will be good in this one?
nothing wrong with the hide you have-you can always bury it a bit deeper if you want to make the opening smaller or add a piece of cork bark to your enclosure....tarantulas don't always use the hides we give them some prefer to make there own:)

I'm going to write a PSA for my fellow noobs about setting up enclosures before buying. I understand why you old fohgees in the hobby set up before you buy your spider, but that may not be practical. I set up 3 enclosures for L.P. Casey sold me, and by the time I had gotten them I realized I had made a mistake. Talked to Casey about it too. Almost gave the poor wahmen a heart attack, and was in a panic to fullfill the housing requirements needed. Also, don't just buy bamboo tongs. Get some metal ones too. Without the rubber tips. The bamboo, and rubber tips are a nightmare for enclosure maintenance. As friendly, supportive, and enthusiastic a lot of members are on this forum, no one told me that, that I could remember, and that could have been a good idea to begin with. Here are my tools for tarantula keeping. Minus the duct tape. I don't know where that came from...
