Greetings. About two weeks ago my desert blond (Aphonopelma) burrowed deep into her enclosure. She had originally had a little viewing window she had made at the end of her burrow but she has since blocked that off with dirt. She has also closed off the entrance of her burrow. I haven't seen her in a week now but have been keeping her water dish full. I understand the species are typically not reclusive and that she might be getting ready to molt. My other colleagues who have kept desert blonds told me that their molts have happened out in the open, not in a burrow, so I'm getting a little confused/concerned. I can't help but worry if she's alright.

Welcome to the world of tarantulas. Doesn't sound like anything is wrong. You have a tarantula that is a bit more reclusive, there's nothing that can be done about that. It may have molted recently or be about to molt. It'll come out when it's ready.

Thank you Chubbs. I've had her in her enclosure at my house since I noticed the bald spot on her abdomen a little while back. I feel a little uneasy transporting her enclosure anywhere while she's in her burrow and could be molting at any point, so I guess she'll be at home for me awhile longer. The kids at the school definitely miss her. Does anyone know how long this particular species burrows away for, at the longest?
