Finally Overcame My Fear!

Hi there! My name is Taryn and I've spent the majority of my life absolutely terrified of spiders. As I aged, I realized that my fear was misplaced so I began working to overcome it. The last year has been awesome. I started catching spiders in my home and releasing them instead of killing them... and I started becoming more interested in tarantulas. The more and more I researched, the more I saw a fuzzy 8-legged creature that had some personality and uniqueness. Pictures and articles and reviews finally pushed me to my breaking point: I had to see if I could handle a tarantula. So I headed over to the local pet store and explained my plight. The guy was thrilled to help and he led me back to a fairly large desert blonde. He held her out to me and with butterflies in my stomach, I held my hand up to her. She came right over to me, slowly, and came to rest in my palm. As I studied her, I felt like she was doing the same to me. And then she started to slowly explore my hands and arms. It felt like little q-tips and before I knew it, I had fallen in love with her.

I'm not ready to own one yet. It's an investment both time wise and financially and I want to do it right the first time. It's also why I'm here on this forum. I can't wait to pick your brains and when its time, share my very first T with all of you. :)

Welcome, and great story! I have one of those Desert Blondes (A. chalcodes)...she just recently began to let me handle her, instead of rearing back and striking. :) Hope you enjoy this forum and the hobby---be forewarned, it's addicting!

Congrats! I'm working on getting over my fear as well! Last week at Repticon was the first time I ever held or even touched a tarantula, and like you I definitely had butterflies in my stomach when I let it crawl across my hand but at the same time I thought it felt so cool! My boyfriend and I purchased our first Ts that day, two little babies:) The fear of these eight-legged critters is quickly going away!
