I am considering getting a tarantula, and I have read up on them a bit, I was wondering if anyone can help me decide what a good beginner T is, how I could control the humidity in the terrarium, and how to lay out the terrarium in general.

the best genus to start with is Brachypelma there hardy & dont need high humidty !!!
all u will need is
1 x enclosure (exoterra breader box is one example)
1 x water bowl
1 x dry substrate (coco fiber)
1 x hide (plant pot or bark )
just simply plase substrate in enclosure add water bowl & hide then place your T in & thats that ;)
if u do go with a brachypelma u will get all the hummidty u need from the water bowl !!!

p.s b,smithi & b,albopilosum are probly the best starter Ts
