Why do tarantulas stratulate?

I’ve been looking into this, but I can only find articles that discuss how tarantulas make noise, but not why. In new to spider ownership and would appreciate the insight.

It is mainly a defence mechanism. Similar to a snake hiss,

And it is not only Tarantulas that can hiss either, some Primitive Spiders can too. The mechanism is very similar to a cricket, they rub two parts of the body together & at least one species of spider, (Wolf Spiders,) use the Stridulation to find a mate.
