I have what I believed and sold to me as an A. Chalcodes, loaned it out for a breeding project and we are now skeptical as to if it is in fact a chalcodes. I have a picture of when I got him and now after his mature molt. Any help is appreciated.

The top image looks similar to an Aphonopelma johnnycashi, named after the singer, as they were discovered close to Fulsom Prison & I believe also because the mature males are all dressed in black.

I have not seen a mature male johnnycashi, but it looks a potential.

Correct me if I'm wrong, the johnnycashi have almost a red colored setae on their abdomen, and stipes on the legs almost like a A. seemanni?

So I am assuming a male johnnycashi is not as common as a A. chalcodes. Besides losing out on a Arizona blond pairing, is this a good discovery?

Yes there is a difference between johnnycashi & chalcodes. But my chalcodes & johnnycashi females do look reasonably similar & unless someone has a reason to distrust an identification, then I am not sure most of us would question a young johnnycashi sold as a chalcodes.

I had a Arachnologist I know look at your spider. He's a Alphonopelma johnnycashi. Find him a date and I'll ship him off for you.
