Is the GBB ur first tarantula? If so, and you want an arboreal, I'd go with a Psalmopoeus cambridgei or P irmina. Still arboreal and plenty fast to get ur blood pumping, and get ur skill level up to par, BUT not as potent a venom as a pokie and not near as fast.
I personally, tho, never took the "safe" or used the "ladder system". I went right to OBT's, pokies and T stirmi. I feel as long as ur responsible, careful, and take ur time, there shouldnt b an issue. YOU, however, are the only one who knows ur personal skills and ur swagger and guts u have. There may b times where a dangerous T gets out and you have to make a bold or dangerous decision to catch it. There may b a T that bolts up ur arm when u drop a cricket in. Will u scream and shake it off?
I made my decisions bc I kno I'm a rock under these conditions from dealing with crocs and other things. I've had my huge female P vittata run out the door and instead of jumping back, I put my chest up against the enclosure to keep her from a deadly fall.
If u feel u may be overwhelmed by an escape or a T running up ur arm and onto ur back, start slow. There's no right answer.
By the way, these crazy things RARELY happen with careful, proper keeping, but also sometimes things do happen. It's just if it does, how ready will u be?
Whatever ur choice, good luck n congrats and always ask us first if u ever have a q or fear or thought. There are true experts who can help you.

Excellent post @SpiderDad61

P. cambridgei is a good starter arboreal in my opinion. Mine was quite calm, but once he saw the chance for freedom he was gone ;) fastest T i've owned, other than the P. vitatta, but she's so small still she hides rather than bolts at any disturbance.

Avics are awesome arboreals, my favorite in fact. Avicularia versicolor is a must have i think. Mine is quite calm and has only bolted for freedom once. That was back when i was new to the hobby and wasn't sure what ot expect from them. Luckily she just ran over the desk top down the side maybe half way then jumped to the bedroom floor. By that time i had a catch cup ready for her ;) Avicularia sp. peru purple is my favorite in that genus, i'll be getting another one soon :)

For terrestrials my favorite genus is the Brachypelma, any of those would be a good addition to your collection. THe more popular ones are B. smithi, B. albo, and B. vagans. Easy to care for and great feeding responses.

If you want the larger species the Acanthoscurria geniculata is a must have for all collections. Great appetite, fun to watch, and they have a distinct personality/attitude ;) I'm tempted to get another one but don't have the room :(

Well i currently have L.Klugi L.Stratipes and L.parahybana then my first arboreal was a Lampropelma Violaceopes or whatever they call it now..then i have the GBB i got today...then i had several others over the years that past or gave for breeding attempts mostly males.....My first Choice would be an OBT but local laws are a pain...so i was looking at the P Irminia...or Nhandu chromatus breeding not my choice since they produce alot of eggs which my lasiodora species already give me....then there is H.Mac...P.Pulcher B.Smithi....so that is my short list of Mature Females i can get for breeding projects

I'd go with the smithi, but the Hmac is tempting as well. Never had one, and I know they hide alot, but I've always thought they were a gorgeous, unique looking arboreal. Grey/white with baboon pattern? Win. From what I hear you'll never see her though..

For another gigundus terrestrial you'll see, A. geniculata hands down. One you won't see, Hysterocrates or Pelinobius.

A different arboreal, I'd get my favorite pokey- rufilata.

Of course, you won't go wrong regardless!
