Hi I'm totally new to this and have only had my Red Knee a month. He has started spinning a web across his hide entrance. Can anyone please tell me if this is normal or being done for a reason please. Thanks
he is about 2 inches including legs and 3 years old ( I was told by previous owner ) I was wondering if it meant he was going to moult ?He's shutting off the world. It's normal. How big is he?
Agreed. Also DO NOT open the 'door' he's made. He'll open it after molting or when he's ready to face the world again.Hello and welcome. Locking the door when preparing to moult is one of the signs, as is @kormath suggestion of just wanting a bit of peace. If new to that enclosure may just be settling in. In case there is an impending moult make sure there is an open water dish. Put food in but if still there the next day, remove it. Nothing to worry about though. Natural behavior.. If he/she makes an appearance, please share pics as we like seeing everyones Ts
Good point @kormath. Opening the door is a no no. We don't break and enter Ts house when they shut the web door on the world ☺ even though we are always tempted to. Best just to leave them to it.Agreed. Also DO NOT open the 'door' he's made. He'll open it after molting or when he's ready to face the world again.

Yea it's easy to want to break open the hide and see what's going on. Nono.Thank you for your welcome and advice this is a lovely friendly forumHe has been in the smaller viv since I got him about a month. I will try and get a pic if he comes out yes he has a small shallow water dish.
My tarantula must be very clever I had made him a hide out of a kitchen roll. Cut down to the width of his viv cut a hole in the middle and put a short bit of tube into the hole so as to make a T shape. so 3 open ends 2 against the viv sides and 1 open. Not happy with webbing the open end he has also webbed both ends that are against the viv and stuck bits of soil into web so no chance of me getting a glimpse LOLYea it's easy to want to break open the hide and see what's going on. I build my hides, to where it's against the "glass" or side of the enclosure, so if they close off the hide entrance, u can still peek into it from the other side, and see what's going on.
May be something u can try in the future. Here's an example....View attachment 16187
Good luck
Mine are bad, they will web the substrate on the "glass" if I do that. They know what I'm doing.[emoji23]me too. lol they think they r hiding...but they really r not! lmao stupid spiders!![]()

wow that's a long time don't you worry he might starve, sorry I'm used to snakes they shed in a weeknope. Leave him alone until he opens his hide again. It could take months to molt. My G. pulchra has been sealed in his hide for almost 3 months now.
First, we call it molting. Next, tarantulas can go many, many months without eating, so yours will be fine. Just be sure the water bowl stays clean and full.wow that's a long time don't you worry he might starve, sorry I'm used to snakes they shed in a weekthat said though they often don't eat for a few months in winter

If my spiders start looking fat I actually stop feeding them. They'll molt eventually. You gotta figure in nature there's times they have bad luck and don't eat for a long while, and that they've adapted to scarcity of food. Not to mention, sometimes they're just not hungry.wow that's a long time don't you worry he might starve, sorry I'm used to snakes they shed in a weekthat said though they often don't eat for a few months in winter

Not me. A small benefit of being in captivity to my way of thinking, is a secure comfortable enclosure and regular mealsIf my spiders start looking fat I actually stop feeding them.
