Theraphosa Stirmi

Picture with the log hide is the most current photo. The other picture is before I moved her into her new enclosure back in November.

My 1-year-old theraphosa stirmi came out of her hide for the first time in a month last night to eat. I noticed you looked a little off and I can't figure out what is going on. Has anyone seen this? Am I just being paranoid? Like maybe I just have really weird lighting since I don't have much in that room? What can I do?
Her behavior has not changed. She eats like a champ, moves just fine. I just feel like she looks pale, almost like she has a thin layer of mold on her.

What is your substrate and what is the humidity level? Also what about the last molt cause either it is a thin female or possibly a male- just guessing

Uhhh WOW. I know lp's kick off a really itchy mat to molt on,but I've never seen either of the two a good friend has kept for years look anything like that after molting. It's really hard to zoom in clearly on my phone.

At first I was just going to say yeah it's butt isn't bald like every other one I've seen, but those other pictures are crazy looking.

I bought her as a sub adult female from a local breeder and vender last November. She hasn't molted yet with me but I've been pumping her up comparatively. I can try to lore her out and catch her to confirm. I guess that's what I get for trusting someone.
I keep the enclosure between 70—85% humidity with misting. Substrate is a mix of 50% Coco fiber and equal parts moss, sand, and baked soil.

If you do decide to catch her up,can you take some more pictures of legs one and two on both sides please? I'm trying to make sense of what I swear I'm seeing. It's in some spots like the exo has peeled back and obviously has to be something in there.

I've been keeping Theraphosa stirmi since 1982. It's urticating hairs . Lasiodora genius don't generate the amount of hairs Theraphosa does. Just because it's not bald doesn't mean it's not kicking its hairs. Theraphosa are well known for this. Living Tarantulas don't mold.

I never once said anything about mold.
When I was talking about the abdomen not being bald as with the rest of my statement,I meant in regards to every other one I've seen.

I'm not saying your wrong not even made a single syllable in debate about it,just that I didn't know that it's that it. Main reason I don't know is I have 0 experience keeping them.
The bald booty comment was because I see tons of post's of keepers asking about their stirmis bald but and generally others responses are looks like a normal

This mold thing on tarantulas?
You seriously have me mistaken or something to think I have ever made such a comment as that.

I don't even think I said anything about mold pertaining to the enclosure.
Just a general curiosity about some closer pictures if they were going to remove it for whatever reason anyway.

There is no need for further photos of such. Ive diagnosed what the problem is. No exo is peeled back...the setae is missing. No need to further investigate or even entertain the OPs claim of mold. Maybe you didn't read it in their original statement. Just throwing it out there so others reading won't entertain that as a problem either.

So you just think the urticating hairs were just glowing weird with the lighting of the picture? There is a ton of debris on the legs that made me most suspicious since I couldn't tell if it was an infection or something else.

You can clearly see the setae rubbed off the legs. I'm sure it was the lightning.

Thank you for all your help, man. So, should I even respectfully confront the breeder for falsely advertising and charging for a female or just leave it be and never go back to them?
That would be up to you. Sexing spiders ventrally can be tricky and mistakes can be made. I'm not even totally sure myself. If Casey confirms it to be a male I might ask for a discount on another purchase or a female at a male price possibly.

Lol! Yes the other pic they posted you can see the missing setae clearly and stuff.... For my own personal curiosity is why even mentioned more pics. Certainly wasn't trying to diagnose anything but I might need some newer glasses.
So glad you got it diagnosed. Those next few pics really shows off why I was confused about what I was seeing. I mean honestly and I'm not being a smart butt saying this, but had the op not posted the additional pics to show more, I would have went on thinking that they really lay the hair down like on a level I've never seen or heard at all about. The missing setae was what I was wanting additional pics of. Just looked weird and I was curious.

Dirt/setae whatever it is. Sorry op wasn't trying to wreck your thread.
