4-5 months ago I bought a dubia roach starter colony of 10 male, 10 female and 50 babies/nymphs. They have literally exploded in numbers like couldn't have imagined. I must have 1000 and there are too many for the 10 gal tank they're in. My Ts don't eat them fast enough. It's crazy

i wish i had that problem. My lats are breeding but nothing is hatching. I'm guessing it's because i have them too dry? I even added a section of moist substrate to see if that would help but no go yet.

I've always heard that roaches will stop producing if its over crowded. I know mine slowed down when I took the heat off, but not much..they've never outgrown their enclosure though, but I do feed females if there seem to be too many adults. @kormath I spray my lats maybe once a month, like all my roaches. I always have nymphs everywhere. I've noticed they like to stick the ooths to the egg crates. Do yours do that?

My dubia don't get watered(sprayed)much, but every couple days when I open the tank to feed and water, the lid n sides are lightly dripping water all around, guessing from the veggies and large water crystals bowl evaporating from the heat. Maybe that's my secret weapon, that I did by accident, lol.

sorry it's the busy time of year here at my work and with my laptop down and school getting out i haven't had much time to read the boards.

I pick the ooths out of the egg crates when i see them, i thought that may be pulling the moisture from them. I feed them veggies when i can remember, usually their hydration is water gel. they eat a mix of dog food, fish food, and dubia food i got from a previous order before i had the dog food and fish food available. I keep the enclosures clean, usually change them out every week or so. A lot of my cleaning crew grew up and flew away, so if i don't clean weekly they start to smell.

I use a mesh thing i got from one of the dubia places online to hold the watergel. Should i mist them every so often or change that out to a dish of some type, like a shallow lid so they can climb in and out. Maybe that would slow down the evaporation of the gel and keep a bit more moisture in?

Mine are setup lazy style ;) i have a sterlite storage container with a latching lid, holes drilled in the top and along the sides at the top all around. put the food on one end the water gel on the other, typically 2 egg crates just laying in there, the container isn't tall enough to stand them up. Maybe i need taller containers so i can stand them up?

I cut the egg crate squares in half, then stand 6 up, end to end and spot glue them together. That way they hold. Also, it's like a roach motel with many floors, so they're off the floor and not crushing each other.
U put a bowl with Roach food n another with water gel, opposite the egg crates. I fill another small bowl with sliced apples or lettuce every 3 days as well. I never spray them....there's plenty of moisture with the fruits/veggies, water gel and humidity. Mine are in a 10 gallon glass tank. It has a screen lid that I covered with thin plexi and drilled vent holes. It apparently works because they're multiplying like crazy.
I DO change the water gel once a week b/c it gets nasty by then. Having this many is crazy. I fill their empty bowl w roach chow and 30 seconds later the bowl disappears and there's a mountain of them on it.

I was thinking of standing htem up and securing them somehow like that. but then how do you get your roaches out of them? i find it's easy to just pick up hte egg crate tap it over a large catch cup then separate those into small deli cups for feeding.

Yes once it's glued all together, I pick it up, and shake it above a plastic bin so they fall out and pick out some feeders for my Ts. Whatever I don't feed off just gets put back in with the others

Nah, they'll definitely keep breeding even if it's over crowded. They'll just end up eating each other. I left them alone for months, no food, no water, and they managed to somehow keep the population up.

I rec'd a mixed order of 50 lats today and was wondering if I could start a colony... I dug out a clear storage tote and put the same exo soil I use for my T's on the bottom, added a cardboard egg carton and added a dish (lid) with roach food they sent with my order. I dropped a few pieces of dog food on that. The water gel you mentioned, I have some leftover I used for crickets... I assume that's the same stuff?? Am I using the right substrate? Do I have to remove the eggs after they lay them to hatch separately? Do I need to provide light? Heat? Do I need to put air holes in the container? What is the life cycle of these guys? My mixed order has some nymphs and then all different sizes up to a bunch of large sized that I'm hoping are big enough to breed already. There are even a couple white mid sized in there. All of these mixed sizes can be kept together correct? Sorry for all the questions. There really isn't much info or care sheets out there I could find. I saw you discussing this and was hoping you'd be willing to help me out.

Your setup is fine:) I grind my dog food but they can eat it regular as well. I give carrots and occasionally apples, a dish of dog food, and a small spray once every week or two, away from the dry food. When you feed veggies, take them out after a few days if there's any left. Lats breed very fast, but with only 50, you shouldn't feed any for several months so they can multiply:)

The only thing I suggest is not to use any substrate. You will want to clean the container out every few months or so, and you'll want to take the roaches out, and dump the rest in the trash. You're gonna dump ur substrate out too. Not to mention they'll dig under it, and they'll b harder to find. Holes are needed on top of the container for ventilation. They like it dark...especially to breed, so I suggest getting a non clear bin, or covering ur clear bin with something to make it dark. They'll drink a lot of water gel, so u may need to buy more. A few pieces of dog food is "ok", but you wanna buy roach chow, and feed fresh Grier n veggies once a week or so. Good luck. They're roaches.......they can survive anything, so you'll b ok, but to get em to breed, try what I wrote......oh yea, and they like it nice n warm

I did break the dog food into small bits but I will try the grinding. And I had an apple that I've been slicing off for my millipedes so I added a few pieces of that as well. I've still got crickets for the big T's so I only need a few of the nymphs to feed my slings (I bought extra) so I won't bother any of the other sizes for a while. I'm tired of crickets --- the smell, the drive to the city to buy them, the struggle to keep them alive for more than a week or two. I'm curious to see how my big T's respond to this new food source. Thanks for your help.

no substrate.... ok well I only put a thin layer on one end under the egg carton so that won't be hard to remove. And while digging around for the water gel I knew I had, I found a brand new bottle of it. So I'm ahead on that one lol. I'll use my dremel and add ventilation holes on top. These guys can't climb. Just noticed that. YAY! Roach chow - I will have to find that. Fruit & veggies won't be hard. I've got that on hand for my millipedes. Should be ok with the dark as I had already stuck the tote out of the way under a table and my lamp is on the other side of the room and doesn't shine on their container. I may have to work on warm... I keep my house right at 70 degrees year round. Well, it seems like I'm off to a good start... Now to wait and watch!! Thanks for your help.

No prob. Good luck. Roach chow is cheap on eBay. U can get like 5 pounds for $12 or so. A cheap heat pad under the container will give them plenty of heat but if u can't get one, u can maybe keep em in the room with the furnace, or washer/dryer since those areas tend to b warmer. Just a thought. They can climb if they want so what I do is run a layer of packing tape around the inside top of the container. They slide off that tape n can't climb it.

That's why i use a clear container, they can't climb those. I just put it in the closet to keep it dark and it's a bit warmer on the top shelf in there.
