Question about feeding

Hi All! I have a question regarding feeding and substrate. My Brazilian Black spiderling has burrowed under 2-3” of substrate and the feeder insects aren’t getting down to him. So he’s not eating. What am I doing wrong?

You aren’t doing anything wrong at all. Slings burrow, primarily for their own safety, it just feels comfortable for them. If the comfort they feel underground outweighs their hunger they’ll stay down there and not risk becoming prey themselves. I have a nhandu chromatus sling that has spent all but 2 days over the last 3 months burrowed away. The first night I saw her out I threw in a worm and haven’t really seen her since. She’s molted and everything under there. It can be frustrating for the keeper but the spider is doing exactly what it wants.

It's possibly coming out over night when it's dark. Leave prekilled food in and you'll more than likely find it gone in the morning

Welcome to TF. No worries, a hungry spider always finds their pray. They can go a long time without food. They do need water.

Don't leave live crickets in with the sling. Pre-kill it first, leave it in the enclosure and remove it if it's not eaten in 24 hours (mainly to prevent mould). The sling, if hungry, will go out and hunt but only if it's completely dark and calm (i.e. your picking up the enclosure likely means the T won't come out, hence leave it undisturbed for 24 hours).
I found slings really fond of cut-up mealworms to you can try that instead of stinky crickets.

When a tarantula is hungry they will put themselves in a position to feed, untomb themselves

When they are burrowed away, it's the spooder equivalent to a do not disturb sign

You didn't do anything wrong! Glad you asked before digging the spider out
