So people keep telling me that terrestrial tarantula stay in burrows as babies till their a few inches. So mine did that for about 5 months. Got him/her as a 1/2inch baby. It's now molted twice. Now it is almost always out of its burrow walking around slowly like adults. Though does make dashes for its burrow when frightened. It is more active and out of its burrow than are 3.5 inch chalcodes which is in its hide 75% of the time.

Our little guy also comes running out of its burrow when people walk by. My question. Has anyone had a sling that wasn't shy and super skittish.

Yep 2 of them now if your just counting the terrestrial burrowers.

B. smithi was 1/4" until he molted this weekend. And the G. pulchripes, also 1/4" before his molt this weekend.

Both of those have a small starter burrow in the corner. They use it occasionally but have yet to enlarge it. Usually they're out on the surface until to bump or move the enclosure, then they go hide.

My slings at the moment are as follows:

1) G. pulchripes 0.0.2
2) B. smithi 0.0.1
3) G. porteri 0.0.1
4) B. emilia 0.0.1
5) P. metallica 0.0.1
6) A. geniculata 0.0.1

All under 1 inch and none burrows except the Pmet which created a funnel web with substrate though technically is not burrowing. They have hides that they use every now and then.

My previous genic that I lost barricaded its hide to molt but my current one molted this morning inside the hide but I can still see it using a flashlight cause the entrance is open. ;)

The ones burrowing right now in my collection is my 3 inch albo and my 2.5 inch albiceps which is molting or postmolt.

I find the G. pulchripes as per the trio that I have as the ones that are nonreclusive or skittish Ts. They in fact attack the water when I refill their water dishes and my 3 incher waves its front legs when my hand is near so that it can climb on.

I've always heard pumpkin patches were hiders. Five of my six slings are almost always out, the other one is shy, and just puts its legs out. It probably can't get it's fat ass through the door. They eat like piggys.
mine has built a web canopy in the fake plants and roams around under it. Or was anyway, now that it's in premolt it stays in the hide.

Hopefully mine stays this way after its left molt. Happy to see a tarantula instead of just a whole opening up to the water dish

They are a great display Ts. As I said my 2 have never hidden away, now they are both on 1" dls one will sit on its cork bark, the other thinks it's arboreal and is usually up the side of the container.

Boheimi gets my vote. Much more vivid red IMHO. Have an emelia too but this is small and so can't make a direct comparison but suspect more along the lines of smithi which I also have, she is very much orange in comparison to boheimi.

B. boehmei is a good one. nice contrast with the red legs and dark body. Start to show colors at about 3/4" and come out of their burrows about that size also. My boehmei is about 1" or so and spends the majority of it's time now on top of his cork bark hide.
