I'd recommend O. diamantinensis. They are great webbers, greedy feeders and stunning colours

Hi Denny Dee... I'm not sure I have a favourite yet as most of mine are slings or young juvies. I think In terms of colour when in adult hood I think my B.Auratum or my GBB will be my favourite. As for temperament and always being out in the open its got to be my B.Albop...

I've tried to pick all my T's that are good for beginners and all ground dwellers . There are a few none beginners T's I will have in the future but for now I'm happy with docile T's.

I would recommend getting an A.Geniculata they make great display T's and are great eaters as well, plus you can't beat the black and white pattern.

Here's a pic of my young female.

I second this. They seem to be very underrated, although, IMHO, make great spiders not just for beginners but also for experienced keepers.

My first tarantula was a geniculata. I bought her as a 2" juvenile and for less than an year she grew to 6" legspan. It's a great species with a huge appetite and they also get pretty big. I like their temperament - defensive and edgy. But they aren't very fast so there's nothing to worry about. I'm in love with mine. This really is a tarantula you won't forget! I've attached some pictures of her (Charlotte). Oh, and this is the only tarantula I care for which has a name.

Did your Genic's temperament change during her life? The reason I'm asking is, because mine is dead confident, yet docile. I can do tank maintenance (water changes, bolus pick up, etc) with her just sitting there watching. She's got a burrow she made under her hollow log, which she sits in of the temperatures drop or she's in premolt, but other than that she's out in the open all the time, even eats and molts in full view. She's never struck a thread pose or flicked hair. She attacks water droplets though, lol, and prey doesn't tend to last any more than a couple of minutes in her vicinity.

How big is yours? Yes, her temperament changed a lot. In the begining she was very docile. I was really surprised when I read about the temperament of the species. In a few molts she started to become more and more nervous and defensive. Now she flicks hairs almost every time I do something near her and will often bite if I touch her with something or at least makes treat postures. I have no problem with that because this the way every wild animal should react if there's an intruder in their territory. How would you react if a huge giant lifts the roof of your home and starts touching your things? I have no problem with changing the water and cleaning. I'm just more careful and have a paintbrush or a stick between my hand and the tarantula so it doesn't attack me. If she flicks hairs, I pull my hand quickly and everything's ok. I have never experienced severe effects from the hairs of any tarantula - there were several times when it was itching me for a minute but most of the time I didn't feel anything (even if my hand was right in the way of the cloud of hairs). I like Charlotte just like she is. This makes me respect her more and treat her properly.

About 20 yrs ago when I was 15 there used to be a small pet shop in my nearest town and I went one day with a friend just to see what was in. They only had one T in and it was a B.Smithi. So my friend and I watched the T its enclosure for a while and left the shop ..wishing I was allowed one at home ... But knowing one day I will have my own T..

Maybe the B Smithi should be my next? But I already have a B.Emilia and I'm trying to get T's that are slightly diffrent from one another ..
I do like the genic's so that's a definite candidate :)

Why not get both the smithi and the genic then,TSS have slings of both in at the moment and if you order 5 of each you get a 20% discount, then when they get bigger and your able to sex them you can keep a female and sell or trade the rest for more T's

Thanks, so I can still expect her to turn into Queen B, lol, although you can probably say that about all Ts. I'm the same as you: I don't mind spiders being feisty, defensive, aggressive, etc, showing natural behaviour really, as you wrote. It's all about respect and caution.
