New Info on Blanche

So, we adopted Blanche the tarantula from my boyfriend's boss, and I guess yesterday he found out some new information about her. It turns out, I was wrong about her age, and she is actually 8 years old. (Or at least he had her for 8 years) He also told my boyfriend, that he was really amazed that she'd allowed me to hold her when we went over to get her. He said that in the past, she has flung hairs at every stranger she met, and even sometimes him. He is very amazed that Blanche hasn't got me yet. Yikes! I almost wish he hadn't told me that. I don't know if I should be afraid of her now, or just take it as a compliment that she seems to do just fine with me. When I cleaned out her enclosure last night, I had my hand in there quite a bit while she was still in there, and even lifted her log with her part of the way on it, and gently encouraged her off of it by slowly tilting it. She never once moved away from my hand, or displayed any type of posturing. Do tarantulas get used to your scent? I won't need to do any more changes in there for quite a while, but I may need to remove prey items and such, and I really hope she will continue to act calmly with me.
Another thing my boyfriend was told, is that the Boss would be surprised if she lived another 2 years. He said he's had many tarantulas like Blanche in the past, and none have made it past 10. I thought that was interesting, as I have read that they can live much longer, around 15 - 20 years. Maybe they are older when he buys them? Any way, he thinks I'm being silly, changing up her substrate and adding new foods to her diet. He said she was fine the way things were for 8 years, so why bother? My boyfriend knows that I am just trying to take good care of her, but he still thinks it's funny that I care so much about a spider.

Good for you :) keep taking care of her the way you see fit.

Nobody knows why spiders like some and hate others. My son's GBB until this last molt was really calm and he could handle her easily. Never flicked hairs or gave threat poses. Now she's skittish for both of us but still won't show any aggression or defensive poses to my son.

She hates me. She flicks hairs at me, is really skittish when I open her enclosure and last night feeding her she shot poop at me. I won't put my hand anywhere near her lol

Do as you're doing, sounds like shes content and happy,
she may get moody from time to time, don't let it upset you,
They get to have bad days too, and like kormath says, they do seem to show
a different attitude with different people. regardless of how simple they say their brains are.

Nice avatar @Kymura I actually didn't recognize you on the first couple of posts. I see the picture first (avatars) before I read the user names. LOL

Wow. Poop throwing, huh? I didn't even know they could do that. I'll be sure to watch out for that now, too! Although, I'm not sure that would be any worse than the hairs. The bosses niece got hairs from Blanche flung at her, and she had a severe allergic reaction, I guess. Sounds painful.

I always tend to think that people underestimate animals. Even animals with simple brains can be very complex. Blanche has been around for almost as long, if not longer, than my kids. Who knows what she has seen, or been through, or learned. I just have to remember to be calm around her, and not let the guys freak me out, and make me scared of her. After all, it seems pretty natural that she would be uncomfortable with strangers, and if she was shooting hairs at the boss, maybe he was doing something she didn't like. As long as I watch for her signals, I should know if it's time to get the heck out of there and leave her alone. She has already given me signals that we're cool, just by not flicking hairs at me or biting me on the day we met. I'm gonna count that as a win. ;)

Hey, yeah. Is that a new picture? I don't remember seeing it before. (I look for the avatars too, sometimes.) Nice picture. I like putting a face with a name. :)
