You can call me Rikki! I have not always been interested in tarantulas, in fact I was dealing with pretty debilitating arachnophobia, couldn’t be anywhere in same room as a spider. But sometimes things change! Me overcoming my fear of spiders, tarantulas etc., started with a little YouTube video starring Lucas the Spider! I thought it was the cutest little animation, ended up getting a Lucas the Spider plushie. I started looking at jumping spiders, associating them with Lucas, then I started joining groups on Facebook and Reddit that showcased tarantulas, looked at the pictures and slowly worked my way up to learning about them in YouTube videos.
Over time, I felt my fear slowly diminishing, I started appreciating and loving tarantulas, and I took a big step in overcoming my fear back in 2020, when I went to an exotic pet shop that cares very deeply for the animals. I held an Avic avic tarantula, over a very small height with the help of a staff member. Ever since then, my interest in tarantulas have heightened. I’ve been doing more and more research, and… I think I might get my first tarantula this year!
If I were to go back in time and tell my younger self that we would get over our fear of spiders, I’d think she’d look like me like I’m nuts hahaha.
