I've got 5 communal 1-1.5" balfouri slings coming and was thinking about setting them up in a 5gal (8x8x12) to start
That sounds perfect. Before doing my setup I did some online researching (let’s say I gave that job to Enzo) and they recommend smaller than bigger for communal setup. The reason behind it being that the closer they are to each other the less likely there is for an “accident” to happen. If they have to much space they might split and become territorial. So far so good and the 4 big juveniles (acquired as a group) adopted the much smaller sling (that I already had on his own) without any issue.

One more thing, although they do burrow, like a GBB they will build up with web rather than go underground if it is easier, like in my setup.
