Hi family,
My son Enzo found this spider dead in my in-laws basement. They have a very large, dark and humid basement, located on Long Island in New York. It is obviously a male, that was dead in the open. Brown recluse (as they name implies) are shy spiders you do not see often, except for the males wandering around looking for a mate.
I saw many different looking brown recluses online and was wondering if any of you could give us an opinion as well :)
@Casey K.
Thank you.

It looks like some type of huntsman, wolf spider or grass spider.

Definitely not a recluse. Doesn't have the telltale fiddle marking on its prosoma, and you're way out of it's geographic range, maybe by 750 miles or more!

If you're interested in learning more about recluse spiders, get a copy of Richard Vetter's excellent book The Brown Recluse Spider from a local library (they can get copies through the Interlibrary Loan), or available by special order from nearly any bookstore as well as online if you decide you need one for your library.

Cheers,
