I served my apprenticeship as a bricklayer & then worked for a mixture of small builders & civil engineers for a few years. I also spent a few years, many years later doing freelance truck driving etc. So I too have spent a few years around the construction industry in various ways. In some ways I was lucky I got out before the industry degraded to what it is now. I had a labourer/ friend, who was a mental health nurse, who made me want seek out different paths. I worked with several people who had both degrees & trade qualifications. But at that time the building trade attracted a people who often did not fit into other ways of life. With the industry being far more relaxed & thus much less controlled by the office types, than it is now. Later going back in as an HGV driver, it was not uncommon to have some fool from an office walk 200 yards plus across an empty site to tell you, that you needed to wear a high viz vest on as you needed to be seen!!!!! And I once got thrown off a site for refusing to put a safety hat on when I got out of my trucks cab, whilst I was parked in a car parking area during my lunch break, as it was "site rules." :eek:o_O I also once left one site without unloading, as site rules said I had to wear a high viz vest & a safety hat to walk from the cab to the back of the truck, even if I was parked on a public road. Not a clever thing to do, when it was something your trades people are waiting for & which had been ordered on special delivery as a result. I am dyslexic, but that effects my spelling, hand writing & grammar. But not my reading ability, nor my intellect.
