Other hobbies are no different. I was introduced to amateur (ham) radio when I was at school back in about 1975 & have been playing with radios ever since. I am also a keen amateur magician & they are no different. On one magic forum if you don't worship at the feet of the right professionals who use their site & recommend their work, then expect to be banned. In amateur radio, contesters will whistle & talk over the top of you, to gain a frequency that you are using. A few years ago I was operating a station for a big Scout Jamboree & had been using a frequency all day, so it had been logged online several times & was thus busy. Then at 5pm when a contest started, I found myself battling a idiot whistling on the frequency I was using to make it unusable for me. And at a club level it can be difficult to get support for parts of the hobby, the majority of the committee do not participate in. And if like me you have a pirate radio broadcasting background, certain elements are not at all happy.
