Mine was rather defensive when younger, even attacking the water when I filled the dish. But she's very relaxed since two molts (she's a mature female now) and very mellow. A true pet rock.Really, I think  you shouldn't worry: they are very hardy, always visible when bigger, great eaters and not very defensive when older (at least mine). And really really huge!
