Would it be a bad idea to suggest a something like a P. cambridgei or a P. irminia as kind of a good learning species? From what I've seen, they are nowhere near as volatile as pokies, but both are still a bit fast and defensive. I feel like they won't be as intense as the pokies are, but would be an alright learning curve for the faster, more aggressive spiders.
