I was a manager for PetSmart for years. When I started, they didn't carry tarantulas or scorpions. They sent out new "care guides" for the new inverts when they started carrying tarantulas and scorpions. The standards weren't great, but that's what you get when you lump 1000 species under the...
Too many variables with the bites. The amount of venom injected can vary greatly, from dry bite to max venom. This is a useful and interesting post, but unless someone wants to inject uniform quantities of venom, I don't think we can really rank them by taking bites. The venom action is...
How long ago did she molt? She still looks soft. It can take them a little bit to harden up, just like tarantulas. If all that was affected are her wings, she'll be okay. Be sure to provide a tall perch for future mantises to hang from. It should be at least twice as tall as the mantis is long...
I'm not really around. I just check my notifications every now and then, and I still get notifications from this thread.
I'm so happy the campestratus is still alive. She'd be hard to replace. Aphonopelma seem pretty under-appreciated. I guess because they're native, they aren't as exciting...
Ugh, dude, what a gut punch. I don't know if I'd have the spirit to get back on the horse. Such a shame to lose such a great collection. Best of luck getting back into it. Where does the collection stand now? What do you still have?
Don't drop it? They really don't pinch. Just don't get squirted in the eyes and you're fine. Mine just crawl, or can be gently scooped, onto my hands. I freaking love them, so congrats and good luck!
It just makes things harder. Move her stuff closer to her burrow. Don't expect her to wander far enough to find things like her water bowl. Be careful with mesh tops - they can get their toes stuck. Maybe get a sheet of plexiglass that will sit on the lip of the tank under the mesh and drill...
By the way, the humidity in the air will be lower than the humidity in the burrow. Using a hygrometer in the tank is pretty useless unless you can get it down where she's living. If you had more experience, you would be able to eyeball the color of the substrate to gauge how humid her burrow is...
Ohh boy, yeah, you should have started with something easier. See if you can sell her and get an LP (Lasiodora parahybana) or something if you want a big honkin' spider. Did you guys look at options? Or did the 15 yr old just want the goliath because it sounds cool? That's a heck of an...
