They are definitely one of the most photogenic species. They are like lions of the arachnid world. Big, brooding, powerful beasts yet fluffy + cuddly looking at the same time (or am I just weird?).
I would love to have my own, but I don't class them as a beginner species, so I'm going to have to wait
@Jess S what do you even mean by beginner species and why do you not class it as one? I was thinking about this the other day, I think this might be the best beginner species, bar none lmao
Ooh explain. I'm all ears. You may talk me into getting one, cos I do have a really soft spot for them.
What I've heard is that they have such a ferocious feeding response plus they can be a bit defensive, that a noobie like me may find them a bit of a handful for a first T.
What I mean by beginner species is ease of husbandry, plus a less defensive, food aggressive demeanour (I know there are exceptions to the rules). So I wouldn't class an Obt as a beginner T. even though they are easy to care in terms of the enclosure conditions.
You've probably heard all that before. So have I! Now I really want to hear why you disagree. Because they are a huge favourite of mine, I'm hoping you can change my mind!
@Jess S i don't see why a good feeding response makes a t harder for a beginner, once again I think the opposite. I've had equally as many threat postures from my genic as I have from my B. Vagans or G. Porteri or a number of other ""beginner friendly"" species. I wouldn't class them as defensive or aggressive personally, this is one of my Ts Im willing to handle. Not as much hair flicking as a brachypelma.
It can move slightly faster than say a B. Hamorii, but unless you're totally unequipped it isnt an issue and if you are totally unequipped you shouldnt should have the former either.
Get a genic. Just get a sling if youre on the fence, by the time its big enough to give you a hard time youll already be a pro.
