Normal tree bark will mold insanely fast. Cook the wood in an oven. Best bet is always Cork bark. Low ventilation and soil to wet will also cause mold. and using a moss other than sphagnum.

I use cork bark for wood and only cork bark. It looks like wood but it is not. Incredibly mold resistant. They come in all shapes and sizes. When i go to reptile shows I stock up on it.

I used to make my own hides by using silicone to stick strips of baked cork-bark from trees around my house to a structure made from GreatStuff foam. I've been using one of them continuously for almost ten years with no mold issue. You just want to be sure you get cork bark and no living tissue; living tissue will mold if you don't get it completely dry.
