If I recall the term tarantula comes from the name of an Italian town where large wolf spiders were causing bites that got infected resulting in the locals giving them almost supernatural properties and creating myths about them.
Slightly different story but very similar to other accounts I've read. It omits the fact that large wolf spiders were present and believed to be responsible for the bites, resulting in large spiders being called tarantulas. That's the only version I've come across that doesn't mention the wolf spiders.
