Hello, my friend bought me a purple pink toe tarantula, a avicularia purpurea if I'm not mistaken, and I'm really excited about taking care of it. I'm a little worried because this is my first tarantula, and I don't know what I'm doing. I believe it's going to be real small when it comes in, and I want to make a big enclosure. I don't mind spending a lot money on it, could anyone tell me the best enclosure for it, and the optimal setup for it to live comfortable? Where can i get everything i need for it? Are there any good videos that i can watch? I'll attach a photo of the enclosure that I just put together so it has something to chill in before I get a better one. I want the best for my new friend, please and thank you.

Enclosure does not look to have enough cross ventilation. I would look at a Exo Terra nano tall. These provide the necessary amount of ventilation for arboreal tarantulas. You may have to modify the screen top, as tarantulas usually get their legs stuck in them. I get the replacement top from Tarantula Cribs that is acrylic.

If the spider is small sling like you are saying, you may just need a 16oz deli cup with many air holes to provide cross ventilation. Keep substrate dry with a water dish, overflow every so often. You can get these for free at Whole Foods.

Get the deli cup, drill 1/16" air holes on top and sides, place substrate, use a bottle cap as a water dish, lay a slanted piece of cork bark and fake plant and you will be golden.

Update, I've made a new little enclosure, I used a 9oz cup. Will this be alright for now?

We have a exo terra 30x30x45 bio active we used with our praying mantis. She died of old age. We want to use that for our tarantula and and looking for a pink toed tarantula. Would an adult or juvenile get their legs stuck in the grid? If we got a baby then will keep it in a cup as shown above until it's big enough but just wanted to check. There is ventilation along the bottom as well so it looks like lots of cross ventilation? I've added pics of what it looks like now. Will change up the plants and use bark etc. Also, would a heat mat on the side suffice as we live in the UK and it's cold? Would be enough to heat up the ambient temp? We own snakes and a crested gecko so understand humidity and temp. We use DHP lamps on them but won't be for the tarantula. Anyone using heat mats?

Need to be an adult avic for that size. Also the screen top is no use any T will chew through that you can cut a piece of acrylic to size and drill holes for Ventilation. With avics it's mainly about the cross ventilation ime. Wouldn't bother with a heat mat unless the room is uncomfortablly cold I'd say less than 17/18°c.

Our house on the UK gets below that in winter between having the central heating on and when we not at home. Will need a heat mat. With the cross flow. How is that possible with a glass terrarium? Would the holes along the bottom and top be enough? Will look at u the acrylic to keep the tarantula from chewing it's way out

Yes use the heat mat then, only cover around a 6th of one side of the enclosure. Ventilation should be fine they have vents at the bottom of the door don't they? And just make sure that the acrylic piece you replaced the top with has plenty of ventilation in it. You may struggle to get an Avic big enough to go straight in there though.

Ok thanks. Yes there are vents along the bottom. Will see what the size is then will start with the cup and come back onto this forum and check I am doing it ok. It looks like will only get a pink toed in a month or so. Not many around in th UK at the moment. Can get the tank sorted in the meantime

There is an adult female Avicularia Aurantica pretty rare so costs a bit on thespidershop. Try CFTN he usually has avics too just type it in Google

Ok...I went into CFTN and there is a sling available. We have also chatted and my hubby and I will rather use a nano heat lamp instead of a heat mat when the spider gets big enough for the enclosure. How long in general do pink toes take to get big enough to go into the terrarium? I read a thread about enclosure and using cups to house the slings.

This is the link

Must I place the cup onto top of the mesh which is insulated on top of my snake vivarium. Worried that it will get cold and can't place it on a heat mat. The cups would be too small to have a gradient and to place on a mat. How do people keep their slings warm enough?

I saw a thread of examples of housing on this forum and will be following that. How does a person water them if the cup and their little mini environment is so small? Lol!

We just checked with our heat gun and the area in the corner on top of our other snakes wooden Viv is bang on 25 degrees. If we place the cup in that area it should be warm enough?

You should NOT use a heat lamp for the spider, not necessary.

That temp will be warm enough for sure. If your house stays around 70-72 degrees F you will be fine without that alternate source.
