I bought a 6 year old female monocentropus balfouri with a large zoo med enclosure. More suited to arbourial spiders. The whole set up and spider cost me only 50 quid and i have to confess i mainly bought it for the enclosure. When i got her home she dpent a few weeks dping some rearranging but now she just stays in her tunnel and does nothing. I see very little sign that shes doing anything including eating. Thought it was premoult but i broke into her sealed off tunnel the other day and found her shed carapace. The rest of the shed must be in her tunnel. She had a strike at me when i had a mess about so she isnt dead. Just a lazy so and so.... Can anybody tell me is this a norm for them to have these sulks. Im used to it from my chilea rose

It is quite normal regardless of species. You never want to disturb their burrow for any reason unless it’s an enclosure upgrade or you are absolutely certain the tarantula passed on (the sign is obvious).

I think PanzoN88 was trying to give some friendly advice there ,and your answer is yes even in communal set ups.

Yes but i was asking if hiding for weeks was something this type of spider does i wasnt asking whether or im allowed to do something with my own spiders or not. I didnt pull its leg off i mearly peeked into its burrow to see if it was ok. If somebody wants to tell me not to do something they should follow it up with appropriate advice as to why i shouldnt do it. Otherwise its just criticising. Opinions are like A** holes.. everybody has one. Only we dont choose to show everybody our a**holes

I think he did answer that ,obviously if it was molting the shock could kill it or if it was still hardening up you could do some damage .But at end of day it is your T so you choose if you want to take the advice or not.At end of day we need to get on with each other and not throw insults , remember there could be young hobbyists reading the post .

When I would give my Balfori super worms they seemed to expire quite quicker than what my OBT could manage. Believe they got some serious venom! Hate to be bit!!

O my goodness. If you found this upsetting don’t go over to arachno boards! In regards to behavior… yep … I rarely see mine. She has a beautiful web and she stays behind closed doors. Seems to be the norm for OW I think….

Lol i would be too intimidated to mess with the burrow like that, they have a nasty bite.
We have 4 balfouri's. Two females, 1 unsexed juvi & a sling & all but the sling are very bold & would rather stand & I would say threat posture. But it's more of a very firm warning of don't mess with me.

I will happily pick an uneaten cricket out of my H gigas or S crassipes etc, enclosure with my hand. But I always use tweezers for anything inside the balfouri's enclosures. And thus I still have two hands left. And Right.
