I got my first arboreal--a c. versicolor sling. Should I try to stick her food up high in her web? Or, will she find food that's on the ground? She's in a small deli cup and spends all of her time up high in her web.
Thank you.
Welcome!
My advice as someone who’s six months into the hobby is to use enclosures specifically designed for tarantulas.
I have two slings in tarantula enclosures and the moisture stays perfect. I kept one sling in a deli cup enclosure I made myself and it was always drying up way faster.

One thing I’ve noticed is that enclosures made specifically for tarantulas are much, much better at retaining the proper moisture level.
I have two slings in tarantula-specific enclosures and one in a deli cup enclosure I made. The deli cup dries out very quickly (a few days) while I rarely...
Is her color duller than normal? Mine was barricaded for two to three months during her molt. She would come out once in a blue moon to drink, it seemed. (I never witnessed it; I only inferred it from movement of the soil and water dish.)
If she continues to hide, I would hold back on offering...
I’m raising three slings between 1/2 to 1/4 inches and I keep mealworms in the fridge and cut them into thirds and feed that. Works like a charm and is much easier than live insects at this stage. The mealworms last for a long time in the fridge.
I think the issue is of each section doesn’t have its own lid it’s easy for tarantulas to climb into their neighbor’s enclosure when you have the lid open.
Also it seems hard if not impossible to build a divider that’s flush with the top since aquariums have that black plastic rim. Unless you...
I only have experience with an A. hentzi sling who is out all the time and has not burrowed. I’m in Minnesota and my house gets into the high 60s/low 70s during the winter.
I know we read all of the time that mites are harmless to tarantulas, but could they be a problem for slings?
I raise fruitflies to feed my newt and the cultures are always full of mites.
I’m also rising a .25” A. hentzi sling (pretty much same methods as you).
